THE ONEFORONE METAFOCUS: IS IT FOR YOU? (I)

(part I of III)

The goal of OneforOne is to unite men in brotherhood without any minimization of our differences. In other words, to provide a metafocus for brotherhood.

It is also a call to brotherhood with a mission. As Leonard Cohen sang “everybody knows that the ship is sinking, everybody knows that the captain lied… everybody knows, everybody knows…” Everybody knows human civilization needs to learn to live in love with the Earth. But this means disbanding our current way of living, and exploring new ways of being with each other, and with the Earth. How to do that? Nobody really knows, because as a race we’ve never been in this situation before. We’ve never done this before…

So OneforOne offers a metafocus for brotherhood for men who see the need to respond urgently, and extremely creatively, to the ecological emergency caused by the unconscious gluttony of our ever-accelerating, globalizing culture. Interested? My aim in this three-part post is to explain this metafocus – so that you can decide if it´s for you – or not.

I might have lost your interest already…. You might not feel that there is a need to learn to live in love with the Earth, or that there is an eco-emergency , or that (even if there is) it is not the inevitable consequence of our collective ´unconscious gluttony´, or agree that there is a need to respond urgently or ´extremely creatively´. But if you are still curious, then there´s one more thing…

OneforOne offers a unifying metafocus for men who (on top of all of the above), also feel that nothing will change fundamentally unless we ourselves change fundamentally – that behaviour is just the natural expression of our mindsets and ´heartsets´, that our current, collective, consumptive behaviour is just the natural expression of our collectively under-educated hearts and miseducated minds, and that, therefore, for fundamental, massive, radical transformation of the global culture to take place we have to become intensely concerned with our own, individual feelings, beliefs and behaviours.

The goal of OneforOne then, is to inspire and educate men in rising up, unified, in brotherhood, with a sense of mission – to face the challenges ahead with dignity, clarity, humility, love, creativity and humor. And by so doing, in collaboration with everyone else (however they might define their sex or gender), to participate in the co-creation of a new culture imbued with such qualities.

The metafocus that OneforOne is proposing for this unified brotherhood is not the acceptance of a certain set of tenets, some new dogma, perhaps some new, super-hip, dogmaless dogma… No. The metafocus is an agreement to question, to explore, to evolve. It is dynamic, living, organic. The metafocus is a unified experiential inquiry.

But it is also more precise than this. It is a unified experiential enquiry in four specific spheres read more…

About the Author:

As a young man Mark renounced conventional education, eventually spending ten years as a Hindu renunciate and devotee. In his early thirties he ‘came down the mountain’ - and became a successful businessman, but he still felt uncomfortable - seeing a huge split in modern culture, which seemed to hide the profound, painful and exquisite journeys of our ´hearts and souls´ from public and political life. In 1993, together with Elisabeth Serra, he started the self-development project Social Alchemy: brotherhood, sisterhood, community. He has led innumerable workshops and retreats for men, and is the author of ‘Sex, Spirit & Community’, ‘Intimate Freedom’ and ‘A Call To The Revolution of The Heart’. Now in his early 60´s, over the last five years Mark´s vision of ´menswork´ and social/ecological change has exploded with energy and urgency. He has presented it in his new book, The Uprising of Man: a proposal, and it is the inspiration behind One for One.
